Early Learning to Year 4

McMillan House caters for children from early learning to year 4 in a friendly, caring environment.

Whether it is holding a birthday party to celebrate the twentieth birthday anniversary of popular children’s book Possum Magic by Mem Fox or taking on a formal leadership role in year 4, children are encouraged to share their views with each other and take pleasure in living, learning and discovering.

Assemblies, playground games, cross age tutoring and special 'whole College' activities mean that the children and staff in McMillan House are known to each other and a happy, industrious environment is created.

A variety of specialist staff are involved in McMillan House, including a librarian, music, art and physical education teachers, school counsellor, special education teacher, a reading recovery teacher and a specialist language teacher (LOTE).

In a commitment to remain at the forefront of developments in education, McMillan House is now authorised to offer the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP). The IB PYP's inquiry-based approach to learning incorporates personal, social and international values. More information about the IB PYP is available at www.ibo.org.

The philosophy which underpins the St Leonard's College’s Early Learning Centres at St Leonard's College is inspired by the system of early years education described as ‘world’s best practice’ and named Reggio Emilia.

The IB PYP is taught at the Early Learning Centre and has many of the fundamental principles of the Reggio approach and allows the two to weave together easily.
