Homework Support

Homework is out-of-class time spent on reinforcing and revising the subject matter presented in class. Assignment work and study for tests and examinations are also integral parts of any home study program. Good study habits are not acquired overnight and the aim of homework is to develop independent learning skills, self-discipline, time management and initiative. Regular homework is one way of developing a student's ability to use their study time constructively.

Duration of Homework

The amount of time that students are expected to spend on homework will depend upon the age, ability, home environment and extracurricular activities of students, including family and cultural obligations. It is important that students of all ages have opportunities for free time, leisure and physical activities outside of school.

As a guide, parents and teachers should consider the following study/homework times:
Years 3 and 4 approximately 2 hours per week
Years 5 and 6 approximately 4 hours per week
Year 7 approximately 6 hours per week
Year 8 minimum of 7 hours per week
Year 9 minimum of 8 hours per week
Year 10 minimum of 10 hours per week
Year 11 minimum of 15 hours per week
Year 12 minimum of 20 hours per week
