Achievements

There have been many achievements over the past 12 months, as demonstrated by the ones listed here.

Rosie Marshall, Visual Communication & Design teacher, was asked to present at the Visual Communication & Design conference 'Reconnect' at Swinburne University recently. For a copy of her presentation click here. A sample of Rosie's work can be seen below:

Carolyn Tudor, Deputy Head of the Junior School at the Brighton Campus, recently went to Japan to work with a school just implementing the PYP. Carolyn and Bernadette Dowling led two workshops in the last few months within Australia, also working with schools embarking on their PYP journey.  Leading these workshops required them to examine and reflect on the PYP curriculum framework, to consider what they are doing in their own school and in the process leads them to consider future developments.  They constantly discuss how beneficial PYP has been to our school; it creates a common language, it demands reflection and collaboration and it instils in our children the vital components they will need as they continue through life.
Life-long learning is vital for teachers as they need to constantly evaluate programs and examine new options to ensure they are doing the very best for the students in their care.  As an IB PYP school we are expected to constantly reflect on our practice and programs and the reflection process is a part the ‘planners’ we use in the pre and post planning process.

Dr Philip Swedosh, Head of Mathematics, received a BH Neumann award in August 2008.  The award recognises mathematicians who have made a significant contribution to mathematics enrichment in Australia.

Amy Vawdrey, prep teacher at the Cornish Campus, was nominated for the National Excellence in Teaching Awards in the Australian Scholarship Group’s Inspirational Teacher Awards category.  The nomination was for her contribution to integrating modern digital technology in her classroom and for co-developing the EcoKids program to teach environmental sustainability.

Amanda Davis, year 1 teacher at the Cornish Campus, was invited to attend Australia’s first Citizen’s Parliament in Canberra in February this year.  150 people from across Australia gathered to review Australia’s democratic system.

Congratulations to Pam Byma, swim coach, who won five medals at the Australian Masters Games in February.

Naoko Nishikawa has been successful in being offered a place in the Web 2.0 Collaborative Learning and Research Program which enables her to further develop her project that she is working on and identify optimal use of her technologies.  We look forward to further updates from Naoko as she continues with the program.

A number of our teaching staff regularly present at conferences, publish journals and textbooks, course and study guides.  For a complete list of all the St Leonard’s College Presentations and Published Material please download the document here.

CUE Week for year 9

Report on CUE week   Laura Mobilia and Tara Presnell, year 9 Cornish
Last term the year 9s participated in CUE week. We spent the week exploring and discovering Melbourne. Each day we participated in activities to help us grow and develop our knowledge of the city and surrounding areas. Every morning we had to catch public transport into Flinders Street station and meet at Federation Square. When we arrived at Federation Square we divided into our groups and set off to accomplish our tasks.

Monday: Tara
On the first day we navigated our own way to The Eureka sky deck where we completed activities and got the chance to experience the Edge. For those of us who went on it, it was an amazing experience to be looking over Melbourne from such a great height. We were all really scared as we waited for the floor to reveal the glass, but once it did we forgot our fears and we were immersed in the city.  From Eureka Tower we were taken on a guided tour of the Flinders Lane Police Station. At the police station we learnt how to take care of ourselves in a large city and how to follow various emergency procedures. After the tour each group was given an envelope with a task inside to complete by the end of the day. My group had to go to the Shrine of Remembrance and complete questions. We walked around the Shrine for a while admiring architecture and history. At 3:30 we met everyone back at Federation Square and departed home on the trains. That is with the exception of Mr Bull’s group who was still on the city circle tram after he took them on a tour of the university that he went to.

Tuesday: Tara
On the second day after taking the train from Cheltenham to Flinders Sreet my group was quick to set off. So far we hadn’t made any mistakes and we were in the lead. Today we had to travel to Victoria Street, Lonsdale Street and Lygon Street. My group was set back about an hour as we went to the wrong Victoria Street and had to walk about 3 or 4 kilometres to the nearest train station. When we arrived in Victoria Street we figured out that we only had 30 minutes to walk down the three streets and record all the shop names, answer questions and get menus and brochures from shops.  This was not including the travel time in between streets. Basically we ended up sprinting down the streets in a panic writing down as much as we could. After completing the activities in the streets we had to make our way to Footscray where we would be having lunch. My group was the last group to arrive at Footscray. The restaurant that we pulled out of the hat was a Vietnamese Noodle Restaurant. We were all starving after all the running. After eating we had to walk around Footscray and find different monuments and shops. After a day like that we were all so exhausted and we were still had three more days to go! The good news was that somehow my group had managed to stay in the lead. We went home that night feeling tired but excited as tomorrow we had the Great Race!

Old Collegians' News & Memories PDF Print E-mail

Many of our alumni catch up at their class reunions and recall fondly their favourite memories and highlights of their school days.  Some of these are recalled below:

Anne Davies OC 1974
Interests: I have developed a great love of Rugby Union through our son’s involvement in Brighton Grammar rugby where Ed excelled.
Career: I completed a three year textile design course at RMIT in 1979. I went on to add a Post Grad degree in Design and also taught  first year Print & Design at the City campus. I freelanced for many years as a designer and then began working as a teacher’s Aide for children with autism at a primary school in NSW. I am currently helping my husband in our new business but remain very interested in art and design.

School memories/highlights: I have only endless happy memories of my many years at school.
• Wonderful friendships, many of which I have retained.
• Many influential and memorable teachers, especially Mrs Cross for German and Emily Beuth for my beloved Art
• Hilarious memories of scripture with Miss MacMillan. ‘People who need people’.
• Who can forget the assembly hall roof lifting off when Mr Cornish announced that we were going co-ed. Loved having the thrill of boys in the last two years at school.
• Recall nearly losing the end of my finger when I patted a rat in science, having been told not to. I still love animals.
Other info: I remain interested and fond of anything to do with St Leonard's College and wish for its continued success.

Gayle Sedgman Wade OC 1974

Interests: Golf; tennis; concerts; movies; horse riding; Rotary.
Career: Tourism owner and Director for a holiday resort and resort management company.

School memories/highlights: The best memory was that of the school becoming co-educational, having a Headmaster govern a traditional all girls’ school and changing it into a forward thinking, more contemporary school. I loved the electives and sharing activities with like minded friends. The friendships we were able to establish with teachers made class time more enjoyable. I loved the athletics carnivals too, as I always did so well.
Other info: St Leonard’s provided the perfect environment to establish my everlasting friendships. It was the first to go co-ed and introduce the IB. I have been able to mention my old school to many people in Queensland who are aware of the school’s virtues. This makes me very proud to be associated with such a fine school.
