Another year of the annual Girlsail event at Davey’s Bay Yacht Club has been completed, and yet again we saw outstanding results from all six teams of St Leonard’s girls.
Three teams in Division 1 and three teams in Division 2 competed:
Caroline Brown (Captain)/Zara Challis
Kate Weppner/Mia Forbes
Sofia Burns/Ella Disney
Jessica Butters/Carien Boshoff
Brooke Robson/Zoe Morris
Eloise Morris/Ella Roberts
Following a series of qualifying races, teams were placed into gold, silver or bronze fleets for the final races of the day. In Division 1, all three St Leonard’s teams qualified for gold fleet. In Division 2 two teams – Brooke and Zoe, and Jessica and Carien – qualified for gold fleet, with Eloise and Ella securing a place in silver fleet.
Caroline and Zara sailed exceptionally well in the finals series, winning two races from two, which saw them come away with the overall win in Division 1. Kate and Mia placed sixth overall with Sofia and Ella finishing in seventh place. In the Division 2 competition, Brooke and Zoe placed fourth in gold fleet, just ahead of Jessica and Carien in fifth position. Eloise and Ella ended their day on a high, winning the silver fleet competition.
The performance of the top two boats from each school are combined to determine the overall best performing school. The fantastic efforts of our top two teams – Caroline and Zara, and Kate and Mia – saw them place first overall and come away with the team trophy.
St Leonard’s have shown their dominance in the annual Girlsail competition over the last few years. This is the second year in a row we have won the overall trophy and the third consecutive year we have come away with the best performing school trophy.
It was a very long and hot day but the whole team persisted and sailed on, coming away with exceptional results in all categories. Well done, girls!
