On Wednesday 24 August, nine teams of Senior School students from St Leonard’s College competed in the Association of Coeducational Schools (ACS) Winter Sport Grand Finals.
Netball continued their dominance from throughout the season, with all three College teams in front at the end of play. This is the third year all three teams have been ACS Premiers, an outstanding feat. The Seconds Netball team were challenged, being forced into extra time, but thanks to Amy Lyon’s leadership and Sophie Bakker’s steady hands, they were able to claim a three goal victory.
Final netball scores were:
- Firsts: St Leonard’s College 52 defeated St Michael’s Grammar 17
- Seconds: St Leonard’s College 36 defeated Westbourne Grammar 33
- Thirds: St Leonard’s College 18 defeated St Michael’s Grammar 14
The Firsts Football team had an historic win, breaking a long Senior Premiership drought (the Reserves won in 2014). Outstanding leadership from Captain, Finn Garraway-McMaster and a final quarter goal from Tanner Ellis put the home team in front, to lead the team to victory against St Michael’s Grammar by two points (62-60).
The Firsts Beach Volleyball team also continued their successful season, beating St Michael’s Grammar three sets to one to claim their second consecutive Premiership. Jemima Walsh, Liam Dalwood and Sally Barton were standouts in an excellent all-round team performance.
Unfortunately, our Firsts Soccer, Seconds Beach Volleyball, Seconds Football and Thirds Volleyball teams didn’t achieve the fairytale ending they were hoping for.
We congratulate all teams on their effort, teamwork and attitude during the winter season.
Later this week, year 7, 8 and 9 Grand Finals will take place. Once again the St Leonard’s College is well represented, with the following eight teams in contention for a Premiership:
- Year 7 B Boys Soccer
- Year 8 Boys Tennis
- Year 7A Boys Volleyball
- Year 8A Girls Basketball
- Year 7B Girls Netball
- Year 9 Boys Tennis
- Year 9A + B Girls Netball
