The final round of the Debaters Association of Victoria Schools Competition was held earlier this month, however the debating season is not over for many St Leonard’s College students. After a highly successful competition, six teams from St Leonard’s have qualified for the State Finals.
To earn a place in the finals, teams must place first or equal first in their grade and region, with only the top five per cent of the 1400 teams across Victoria achieving this feat. St Leonard’s College competes in the Brighton Region, which encompasses schools from Albert Park to Mentone including Brighton Grammar School, Firbank Grammar School, Leibler Yavneh College, Star of the Sea College and St Bede’s College. Only nine teams from the Brighton Region have qualified for the State Finals, and we are very proud that six of those hail from St Leonard’s.
Our State Finalist teams – three from year 11, two from year 9 and and one from year 10 – represent one third of our debating cohort. To have such a large number of students performing at this level speaks to the hard work and talent of our debaters and the quality of our debating program.
The College congratulates these teams on this remarkable achievement and wishes them the best of luck for the State Finals.
