Top honours for St Leonard’s debaters

Each year, the Debaters Association of Victoria presents their prestigious Swannie Awards to recognise the best speaker in each grade and region. In an outstanding result, St Leonard’s students Kate Garrow, Dario Pagoda and Niamh Nolan were respectively named as the best speakers in the A Grade (year 12), B Grade (year 11) and C Grade (year 10) in the Brighton region of the Schools Competition, which encompasses member schools from Albert Park to Mentone including Brighton Grammar, Firbank Grammar, Mt Scopus Memorial College and McKinnon Secondary College.

Kate and Niamh were also been named as the recipients of the 2015 Competition Swannie Awards. These exceedingly rare awards are presented to the best debaters from across the entire Victorian Schools Competition. This year, Kate was selected as the best Victorian debater in the year 12 division, and Niamh in the year 10 division.

The Schools Competition is the largest debating competition in the English-speaking world, involving more than 10,000 students representing 269 schools across 19 regions.

Congratulations to Kate, Niamh and Dario on these outstanding achievements.
